My Face Has Seen This Earth Before

“This drawing was originally presented unfinished, but at the time I didn’t know what was missing. The figure was hairless surrounded by smudged charcoal. I had no love for her, she sat untouched for months in my apartment...until I (re)met my grandfather, Marvin Navarro McQuitty Sr. He introduced me to my past selves. His years of collecting images and information about our ancestors has now become our family legacy. In the faces of all my ‘greats’, I saw little bits of myself, and realized, my face has seen this earth before. The chair she rests on is over 100 years old and belonged to my great great grandmother.”
